I’ve put a tenner each way on Munsef for the Melbourne Cup tomorrow. He’s an old boy over from Britain giving it a go.

Munsef is a rags to riches story. Discarded by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum, who won Melbourne Cups with At Talaq and Jeune, Williams got the horse when it appeared he was washed up.

“He went off the boil for 12 months and was sold. Dandy Nichols took him to Dubai and whether he never coped with Dubai or wasn’t in form, I don’t know,” Williams said.

“Munsef’s improvement back home has been quite amazing. He started off as a well-handicapped horse in May when we got him and his form has been on a steep upward curve.

“To be honest, his first run for us was a little, ‘let’s see how you go son’. We bought him for the equivalent of $25,000 and put him in claiming race, where someone could have bought him for $35,000 purely to see where we were.

“I shit myself because he bolted in (won) half-fit. I thought I was going to lose the horse.”

His odds on Friday were 78/1. Wish us luck. I’d love it if he won.
